A Library of Genealogy, History and Biography

Family History Center

What is it?

The Family History Center in Godfrey Memorial Library began operation in January of 2002. The Genealogical Society of Utah granted Godfrey a license to operate as a branch of the Family History Library in Salt Lake, thus allowing film borrowing privileges from the FHL microfilm repository. Godfrey's association with the Family History Library means that the enormous collection of more than 2 million rolls of microfilmed genealogical records are readily available to patrons for a rental fee.

How does it work?

Patrons can order films for viewing and view them in the FHC for a limited time. Films are returned to Salt Lake at the end of the rental period. While the library in Salt Lake does not lend books or other publications to Family History Centers, patrons can request photocopies of pages of published material from Salt Lake for a fee. The Family History Library Catalog can also be accessed from a home computer by going to www.familysearch.org. Click on the Library tab, then the Family History Library Catalog tab. At Godfrey FHC microfilm readers and copiers are available for patron use, along with online access to the Family Search website at www.familysearch.org.

How do I start?

There are various choices for searching the catalog, the most frequently used being the Place and the Surname searches. When film numbers have been selected, the patron must create an account on Familysearch.org to order the film. When films arrive, patrons are notified. We ask patrons to 'sign up' for microfilm reader/printer viewing time. Especially for patrons who must travel a distance, it is recommended that a reader/printer be reserved for use ahead of time. Call 860-346-4375 to schedule your appointment.

What other resources are available to me?

Most FHCs have a limited number of books in print, usually local histories and genealogies. We have no books in our "room" because we have the advantage of the Godfrey stacks being right outside the door. Along with local histories and genealogies, there are numerous reference books, city directories, a bible collection, and an international collection to name a few.

When are you open?

Do stop in to visit the Godfrey Family History Center. Our hours are
Tuesday 1 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.,
Thursday 1 p.m.- 4 p.m., and
Friday 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

FHC hours are different from regular library hours. See the
About Us tab at the top of the page and click on Contact Us for
library hours and our inclement weather policy. Also, please
keep in mind that the FHC is staffed by volunteers, and there may be
times that our usual hours of operation are interrupted. If you are
traveling any distance, please call in advance to be assured
that a volunteer is on duty.
